How home care pricing works in Australia

There are two main ways to access home care. Here's a plain-language breakdown of each.

Government-funded

Support at Home Program

The Australian Government's Support at Home program provides funding to eligible older Australians to access care in their own home. The government allocates a quarterly budget based on your assessed classification — there are 8 classification levels.

You use that budget to purchase care hours and services from an approved provider like J.PEER Health. Depending on your financial circumstances, you may have a small income-tested contribution, but many clients pay nothing beyond their government allocation.

  • Requires an ACAT assessment through My Aged Care
  • Government pays the majority of your care costs
  • You choose your provider and your services
  • J.PEER Health guides you through every step
Private / Self-funded

Private Care

Private care means you pay directly for the care you receive. There's no waiting for an assessment, no government allocation — just the support you need, when you need it. Ideal for families who want to begin care immediately.

Private care is also a great option for people awaiting a government assessment, those who want additional hours beyond their funded budget, or short-term needs like post-hospital recovery.

  • No assessment required — care can start quickly
  • Transparent hourly rates, no surprises
  • Flexible hours — as few or as many as you need
  • Seamless transition to funded care when approved

Support at Home funding levels

The government classifies care needs into 8 levels and assigns a quarterly budget accordingly. Your assessment determines your level.

Level 1

Entry-level support

~$5,000–$7,000/yr

Light assistance — help around the house and occasional personal care.

Level 2

Low-level support

~$7,000–$12,000/yr

Regular help with daily tasks, personal care, and social support.

Level 3

Low-medium support

~$12,000–$17,000/yr

More frequent assistance with a wider range of daily living activities.

Level 4

Medium support

~$17,000–$22,000/yr

Daily care and support, often including some nursing or health support.

Level 5

Medium-high support

~$22,000–$28,000/yr

Substantial daily support across personal care, domestic, and nursing.

Level 6

High support

~$28,000–$35,000/yr

High-frequency care, complex health needs, and clinical support.

Level 7

Very high support

~$35,000–$45,000/yr

Intensive daily care, often including overnight or specialist nursing.

Level 8

Intensive support

~$45,000–$60,000/yr

The highest level of home-based support for complex, ongoing needs.

J.PEER Health pricing — exactly what you'll pay

We'll give you a full written fee schedule before your care begins. No surprises, ever.

Care management fee

A competitive percentage of your quarterly Support at Home budget. This covers all care coordination, scheduling, care plan management, quality reviews, and after-hours support. Our management fees are among the most transparent in Melbourne's south-east.

We'll explain the exact percentage when we meet — call us or submit an enquiry to get the conversation started.

Hourly care rates

Hourly rates vary by service type, time of day, and whether care is required on weekends or public holidays — in line with industry standards. We'll always show you the exact hourly rate for each service before you agree to anything.

No charge for language support

We will never charge extra because your carer speaks Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, Tamil, or Malay. Language-matched care is simply how we work — it's included as standard, not an add-on.

Written fee schedule

Before your care begins, we provide a clear written schedule of all fees — management fees, hourly rates, and any other applicable charges. You agree to it in writing. There will be no unexpected bills.

No lock-in contracts — ever. You can change your services, adjust your hours, or pause care at any time with reasonable notice. Your care plan works around your life, not the other way around.

Private care, on your terms.

Some families choose Support at Home. Others prefer the certainty of private care from day one — a dedicated care manager, hand-picked carers, and a start date that works around you rather than an assessment queue. Same services. Same transparent rates. Your choice.

A dedicated care manager. One person who knows your family, coordinates everything, and answers when you call.
Hand-picked senior carers. Personally matched to your parent — personality, language, and experience considered, never assigned at random.
Care within days. No assessment queue. Care can begin within days of your first conversation with us.
Flexible by design. Top up a government budget, bridge the wait for funding, or stay fully private — we work whichever way suits your family.

Call us for current private care pricing. We'll give you a transparent hourly rate for your specific needs — no guesswork, no hidden costs.

Pricing questions, answered honestly

We know home care pricing can feel confusing. Here are the questions families ask us most.

Contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or visit myagedcare.gov.au to request an assessment. An Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) will visit you at home and determine your classification. J.PEER Health can help guide you through this process — just give us a call and we'll walk you through every step.
Some clients have a small income-tested contribution depending on their financial circumstances. My Aged Care will advise you of any contribution required after your assessment. The good news is that many clients pay nothing beyond their government allocation — and even those with a contribution typically find it very manageable. We'll help you understand your situation clearly before you commit to anything.
Yes. Private care can begin within days of your first conversation, at the same transparent hourly rates on our fee schedule. Many families use it while awaiting assessment; others choose to remain fully private with a dedicated care manager. Either way, if government funding begins later, we transition you seamlessly.
No. We don't believe in locking families in. You can change your services, adjust your hours, or pause care at any time with reasonable notice. Your care plan should work around your life — not the other way around. If your circumstances change, we'll adapt with you.
The management fee covers care coordination, scheduling, care plan development and review, quality monitoring, after-hours support, and all administration. It is charged as a percentage of your quarterly Support at Home budget. We will always be upfront about this percentage — and it will be in writing before care begins.
We don't compete on price alone — we compete on value. Our management fees are straightforward and competitive. Our carers are experienced, vetted, and often culturally and linguistically matched to your family. We don't charge extras for language support, care planning, or after-hours calls. If you're currently with another provider and want to compare, call us for a no-obligation conversation — we'll give you an honest picture.
