Arranging Home Care for a Parent While Working Full-Time: What Actually Helps

The second job nobody applied for

It usually starts small. A few calls to book Mum's appointments. Groceries dropped around on the weekend. Then a fall, or a diagnosis, or simply a hard conversation — and suddenly you're coordinating a parent's care between meetings, on hold to providers during your lunch break, and lying awake wondering whether anyone checked in today.

If that's you, you're in the largest group of people we talk to: adults in their 40s and 50s, working full-time, often with children still at home, trying to arrange care for a parent on top of everything else. The care itself isn't the hardest part. The coordination is.

Why the coordination burden falls on you

Most home care is organised around the provider's roster, not your family. You get the carer who's available, at the time that suits the schedule. When something changes — a hospital stay, a new medication, a carer on leave — you're the one who notices, chases, explains and follows up. Every phone call starts from the beginning, with someone new.

None of this is because individual carers don't care. It's structural: when no single person owns your parent's care, the coordination defaults to the family. Usually to one member of the family.

What a dedicated care manager actually does

The single biggest change for busy families is having one experienced person who owns everything. At J.PEER Health we build our Private At-Home Care Concierge around exactly this. Your care manager:

Knows your parent. Their routines, preferences, medical picture and personality — so nothing needs re-explaining, ever.

Arranges the team. Senior carers are hand-picked for your parent and introduced before care begins. If someone isn't the right fit, you say so once and it's handled.

Watches for change. Appetite, mobility, mood, memory — the small shifts that matter get noticed and raised with you early, not discovered in a crisis.

Deals with the system for you. Hospital discharge planners, GPs, allied health, nursing needs — coordinated on your behalf, with you informed rather than involved in every logistical step.

Answers when you call. One number, one person who already knows the whole story.

Getting care started without taking a week off work

The traditional path — assessment, classification, allocation — takes time, and it's worth pursuing: Support at Home funding is valuable and we help families access it constantly. But it doesn't have to be the starting point. Care arranged privately can begin within days of a first conversation, which means your parent is supported now, while any government funding process runs in the background. If funding is approved later, the arrangement transitions across seamlessly — same carers, same care manager, no disruption.

And because our private rates are identical to our published rates for funded care — all of them on our pricing page — starting privately isn't a financial penalty for wanting things handled quickly.

One conversation is the whole first step

You don't need to arrive with a care plan. Tell us about your parent — what's changed, what worries you, what a good week looks like for them — and we'll tell you honestly how we'd help, what it would cost, and what your options are, including the government-funded ones. Call 0469 371 121 whenever suits you, including evenings and weekends, or request a consultation and we'll call you.
